M12 Connector SKTL High-Current Pin Configurations and Applications

Oct 16, 2026

The M12 connector is one of the most widely used circular threaded-locking connectors in industrial automation. In accordance with the relevant IEC 61076 series standards, M12 connectors use mechanical coding to prevent incorrect mating. Different coding types feature distinct pin arrangements and keyway positions, ensuring that only compatible plugs and receptacles can be properly connected. In addition to signal codings such as A, B, D, and X, which are used for sensors, actuators, and industrial Ethernet, four dedicated power codings—S, K, T, and L, collectively known as SKTL—are designed for reliable AC and DC power transmission.

Compared with earlier approaches that used A-coded or C-coded connectors for power transmission, dedicated SKTL power codings offer higher rated voltage and current capabilities in suitable configurations. Their mechanical keying also helps separate power connections from signal connections, reducing the risk of equipment damage, voltage mismatch, communication interruptions, and electrical safety hazards caused by incorrect mating. SKTL-coded connectors are covered by IEC 61076-2-111 and can support rated voltages of up to 630 V and rated currents of up to 16 A, depending on the coding and product configuration. Combined with IP67 or higher protection ratings where specified, they are widely used in automation equipment, motors, robotics, and industrial control systems.

As a specialist brand in industrial connectivity, CAZN designs and manufactures M12 SKTL power connectors in accordance with applicable IEC requirements. Through continued optimization of material selection, contact manufacturing, ingress protection, and electrical reliability, CAZN provides compact, dependable power connection solutions for industrial automation, robotics, motor drives, new energy equipment, and rail transportation.

T-coded connectors are suitable for lower-current DC applications within their specified ratings, while L-coded connectors support higher-current DC distribution for compatible motor drives and equipment.

CAZN T-coded and L-coded products offer different contact configurations to accommodate varying power and grounding requirements. Selection should account for motor starting current, continuous current, cable length, voltage drop, and the operating environment rather than relying on nominal current alone.

4. Fieldbus and I/O Systems

Powering fieldbus modules and distributed I/O equipment is a typical application for T-coded and L-coded connectors. T-coded connectors can supply low-voltage DC power to field devices and communication modules, while L-coded connectors can distribute higher DC currents where required.

Because dedicated power coding is mechanically differentiated from standard M12 signal codings, compatible SKTL connectors help reduce the risk of connecting power circuits to signal ports. CAZN T-coded and L-coded connectors can support more organized wiring and maintainable power distribution in industrial networks.

5. Intelligent and Industrial Lighting

LED lighting systems, industrial luminaires, and outdoor lighting installations may use L-coded connectors for DC power distribution when the electrical ratings are suitable. CAZN L-coded connectors can be specified with suitable weather-resistant cable options for factory lighting, outdoor luminaires, and landscape lighting. Actual suitability depends on the connector's rated current, cable temperature rating, UV resistance, and the environmental requirements of the installation.

6. New Energy Equipment and Rail Transportation

In new energy equipment, charging infrastructure, and rail transportation systems, SKTL connectors can provide power connections between control cabinets and compatible devices. S-coded connectors may be used in AC power distribution, while K-coded connectors are intended for higher-voltage AC power applications within their specified ratings.

Protection against dust and moisture, combined with suitable vibration resistance, can support reliable connections in mobile or demanding environments. CAZN SKTL connectors designed to applicable IEC 61076-2-111 requirements can be evaluated for these applications according to the equipment's voltage, current, environmental, and certification requirements.

7. Demanding Environments: Food Processing and Pharmaceutical Facilities

Food and beverage production and pharmaceutical manufacturing may involve frequent washdowns, moisture, cleaning agents, and strict maintenance procedures. Connectors with appropriate materials and higher ingress protection, including IP69K-rated configurations where available, may be considered for installations exposed to high-pressure cleaning.

Suitable PUR cable jackets can provide resistance to oils and selected chemicals, depending on the specific formulation. CAZN can evaluate connector and material options against application requirements, but IP69K protection, corrosion resistance, and chemical compatibility should be verified for the exact product rather than assumed across the entire SKTL series.

Selection and Installation Considerations

Applicable standards: SKTL power connectors fall under IEC 61076-2-111, which addresses relevant dimensional, coding, safety, and interchangeability requirements. Confirm the standard edition and product-specific compliance documentation for the selected CAZN connector.

Ingress protection: IP67-rated models are designed for protection against dust ingress and temporary immersion under defined test conditions. Applications involving high-pressure or high-temperature washdown may require a specifically rated IP69K product.

Cable selection: PUR high-flexibility cables are often preferred for dynamic applications such as robotic motion and drag chains, while PVC cables may suit certain fixed installations. S-coded assemblies may use 16 AWG conductors, approximately 1.5 mm², while L-coded assemblies rated for 16 A may use 14 AWG conductors, approximately 2.5 mm². Final sizing must account for cable length, ambient temperature, bundling, installation method, and applicable electrical requirements.

Installation options: Depending on the product series, available arrangements may include overmolded cordsets, field-wireable connectors, panel-mount or bulkhead connectors, and straight or angled housings. The appropriate option depends on serviceability, installation space, and whether the cable connection is fixed or subject to repeated movement.

Operating conditions: A temperature range of approximately −25°C to +80°C, contact resistance of no more than 5 mΩ, and durability of around 500 mating cycles may be available for particular product models. These values are product-specific examples, not universal requirements for all M12 SKTL connectors, and should be confirmed in the relevant CAZN datasheet.

Selection sequence: First determine whether the application requires AC or DC power. Then identify the required voltage, continuous current, pin configuration, and protective earth arrangement. Finally, specify the protection rating, cable construction, mounting method, and operating environment. CAZN offers SKTL connector configurations for different installation requirements, subject to the specifications of each product series.

Conclusion

The four M12 SKTL power codings provide distinct solutions for industrial power transmission. S-coded connectors support AC applications up to their specified 630 V / 12 A ratings, while K-coded connectors address higher-current AC requirements with ratings of up to 630 V / 16 A under the applicable IEC requirements. For DC systems, T-coded connectors support applications rated up to 63 V / 12 A, while L-coded connectors provide up to 63 V / 16 A for compatible high-current DC distribution.
