Custom M12 Field-Assembly Connectors for AGVs and Collaborative Robots

Oct 23, 2026

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and lightweight collaborative robots are essential components of intelligent manufacturing. AGVs operate through continuous, repetitive movement, subjecting cables inside drag chains to repeated bending. Collaborative robot joints, meanwhile, often have extremely limited internal space and may require a single connector to integrate servo power and differential encoder feedback signals. Conventional off-the-shelf M12 connectors can struggle to meet these demands. Standard PVC cables may be unsuitable for continuous-flex applications, inadequate shielding can contribute to signal instability, and bulky overmolded connectors may interfere with assembly inside compact robot joints.

To address these challenges, two robotics manufacturers partnered with CAZN to develop customized M12 field-assembly connector solutions tailored to their respective applications.

For a warehouse AGV project, CAZN developed a custom A-coded M12 field-assembly connector featuring a high-flexibility PUR drag-chain cable and an optimized strain-relief structure. The cable is designed to achieve a bending life of up to 1.5 million cycles. A 360° braided shielding module helps suppress electromagnetic interference from onboard motors and maintain stable navigation sensor signals. Straight and angled connectors, along with front- and rear-mount panel receptacles, support different installation requirements.

For a lightweight collaborative robot joint project, CAZN developed a custom M12 field-assembly connector with a mixed power-and-signal pin configuration. Its modular contact arrangement integrates servo power and encoder feedback signals through a single connector. The compact 90° angled design reduces the installation footprint and helps prevent interference with surrounding joint structures. Enhanced shielding helps resist interference from servo drives, while IP67 protection supports use in typical industrial workshop environments.

Modular Customization for Faster Development

Both projects adopted CAZN's modular assembly approach while retaining the standard M12 threaded interface. This eliminated the need for a completely new set of molds, shortened the sample development cycle, and helped keep mass-production costs closer to those of standard products.

The AGV solution has entered long-term volume supply for a warehouse equipment manufacturer. The collaborative robot joint solution successfully passed vibration and high- and low-temperature aging tests and has progressed to small-batch production.

Robotic equipment operates under multiple constraints, including limited installation space, vibration, repeated cable bending, and electromagnetic interference. CAZN's custom M12 field-assembly connectors provide a flexible way to address these combined requirements through modular configurations tailored to mobile robots and collaborative robot arms.

From prototype evaluation to mass production, CAZN provides integrated industrial connectivity solutions designed to help robotics manufacturers improve installation compatibility, signal reliability, and operational stability.
